Czech Railways (ČD) is gradually introducing into international operations two new types of comfortable open carriages which have come into existence by rebuilding carriages with individual compartments. These wagons also offer comfortable travel to passengers using wheelchairs in an air-conditioned environment, a special compartment for passengers travelling with children including space for stowing a pram or stroller, and space for stowing bicycles. These carriages will serve in regular operations on connections on the Prague – Ústí nad Labem – Děčín – Berlin – Hamburg – Kiel route.

Nine type Bhmpz 228 modernised carriages each offer 60 passengers an open compartment with seats arranged behind one another accompanied by folding tables, or with seats facing one another accompanied by larger tables with fold-out leaves. The seats have textile upholstery, are adjustable, and are equipped with 230V electrical sockets with integrated USB ports for charging passengers’ small electronic devices. Passengers will also have a WiFi internet connection available.
Passengers will be kept informed on the progress of the journey by an audio-visual information system with several LCD monitors located in the open compartment and boarding areas. The carriages offer generously dimensioned storage spaces for stowing large luggage items.
The compartment also has expanded open space with two folding seats that can be retracted to transport two passengers using wheelchairs. The larger space without seats will facilitate their ease of movement, as will the wide hallway leading to the boarding area and WC, which is disabled-accessible with sufficient space for operating a wheelchair. The WC is also equipped with a folding diaper-changing table.
Right next to the boarding space and WC with diaper-changing table is a closed four-seat compartment for passengers travelling with children. This compartment has a large table with fold-out leaves that can be used for drawing or for table games. The compartment also has extra space for a pram or stroller. In addition, the carriage is equipped with a small closed compartment for the train crew.
Another nine class Bdmpz 227 carriages each offer passengers 72 upholstered adjustable seats arranged in a similar manner. One of the boarding areas also includes space for stowing eight bicycles. Other equipment, e.g. electrical sockets, tables, shelving for large luggage items and a WiFi internet connection, is similar to that of the carriage type described above.
Technical equipment hidden from the passenger’s eye has been repaired or replaced as well, e.g. the central energy source (CZE), air conditioning, closed WC system and other carriage equipment.
These carriages are now gradually being deployed into regular international operations on all EuroCity connections operated by Czech trains on the Prague – Ústí nad Labem – Děčín – Berlin – Hamburg – Kiel route.
